What is a doc file?

The DOC file extension has been used since the early days of computers. Originally, the DOC file extension was used for plain-text documentation of programs and computer hardware on a number of operating systems. Corel WordPerfect used DOC as a proprietary extension during the 1980s. Since Microsoft elected to use DOC for their proprietary word processing format in the 1990s, the original uses for the DOC file extension became mostly obsolete.

Microsoft Office Word Formats have included a variety of DOC extensions over the years. In Microsoft Office Word 2007, the DOC format was replaced by the new Office Open XML format DOCX. Newer DOC-based file extensions include .docx and .docm. Microsoft Office Word 2010 uses these newer formats, which are also compatible with Word 2007.
