What is a lbm file?

LBM files are raster image files created using Electronic Arts Deluxe Paint program. Introduced during the early 1980’s for the Commodore Amiga 16-bit and 32-bit personal computers, LBM files are represented as a grid of rectangular pixels, creating an image on a computer screen. Using Deluxe Paint, users could design and edit bitmap images, creating multiple bitplanes. LBM files support lossless data compression using Run Length Encoding. LBM files were a popular format for bitmap icons, animations and by game developers. LBM falls under the Interchange File Format (IFF), a container developed to increase software compatibility of the Commodore-era.  Other examples of raster image files are PCX, BMP and JPG.
