What is a xlsx file?

XLSX files contain spreadsheets created with Microsoft Excel. XLSX files store data in worksheets comprised of cells arranged in grids of rows and columns. The cells may be formatted individually for custom color, border, style, font and size. XLSX files may also include charts, mathematical functions, styles and formatting. Cells may reference other cells to compute a value. For these reasons, XLSX files are frequently used to store financial data, and to create mathematical models.

XLSX files are created using the Open XML file standard introduced in Microsoft Office 2007, and compressed using ZIP compression to reduce file size. The ZIP archive contains the file [content types].xml, which describes the spreadsheet as a whole, and an XML file for each individual worksheet.  Versions of Microsoft Excel before 2010 used the XLS file format.
